چکیده

Expressions for the pressure-dependent apparent elastic constants of cubic crystals are derived in terms of their original secondand third-order elastic constants. New expressions are obtained for the apparent compliances and their pressure derivatives. Results are shown to be in agreement with those based on the apparent elastic moduli. New Estimates of the Third-order Elastic Constants for Isotropic Aggregates of Cubic Crystals

An improved method, based on an extension of the self-consistent method from the linear theory, is proposed to evaluate the effective third-order elastic constants for isotropic aggregates of cubic crystals. The calculated constants are compared with the Voigt and Reuss-type estimates, which are currently the only other analytical estimates available for these constants. The agreement between c...

Elasticity in crystals under pressure.

The elastic behavior and stability of elemental crystals are studied in the neighborhood of a stable equilibrium state, also called a phase, at finite pressure p. It is shown that two kinds of elastic constants are needed to describe elasticity under pressure. One set, designated as c(ij),i,j = 1-6, determines stability or lack of it; another set, designated as c(ij)(p), describes the linear re...

Second Order Elastic Constants, Third Order Elastic Constants, Pressure Derivatives of Second Order Elastic Constants and the Low Temperature Thermal Expansion of D-tin

The complex behaviour of metals under severe thermal and stress environments is influenced markedly by their elastic properties. Indeed the response of a material tc~ an applied stress is always determined by the elastic constants and their pressure derivatives. Furthermore, both the mechanical and thermodynamic equation;$ of state of a metal that contains dislocations require detailed knowledg...

Constraints on grain size and stable iron phases in the uppermost Inner Core from multiple scattering modeling of seismic velocity and attenuation

We propose to model the uppermost inner core as an aggregate of randomly oriented anisotropic “patches”. A patch is defined as an assemblage of a possibly large number of crystals with identically oriented crystallographic axes. This simple model accounts for the observed velocity isotropy of short period body waves, and offers a reasonable physical interpretation for the scatterers detected at...
